Welcome to our class webpage! I am Haley McGlohorn. This is my 11th year teaching first grade. I have a B.S in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Divergent Learning. I am so pleased to have your child in my class this year. I am excited about learning and I want all of my students to feel that same excitement. There are so many wonderful things to learn in first grade. You will be amazed at the changes that will take place in your first grader this year.
I believe that a child's first place of learning is the home. You have been your child's very first teacher. I appreciate the opportunity of joining you in helping your child learn the skills he or she will need as a second grader and as a lifelong learner.
I also believe that all children can learn. I do, however, realize that children have strengths, needs, and learning styles, and therefore will learn at different rates. We must remember to be supportive of each child's efforts and progress, and celebrate his or her successes no matter what they may be.
The first grade curriculum is driven by the South Carolina State Standards. It consists of English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Health, and Science. Our day will be busy with all of these things. We will learn our Science, Social Studies, and Health concepts through theme studies. Students will participate in guided reading, shared reading, writing, mini-lessons, and read alouds.
